Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic To Provide Faster, More Efficient Service

Monday, November 16, 2009

Barrie families will soon be able find family health care at a new clinic led by nurse practitioners opening at Georgian College.

Nurse practitioners are able to treat common illnesses and injuries, and order lab tests, X-rays and other diagnostic tests. They can also refer patients to specialists. They will work with doctors, nurses and other health care providers at the clinic.

Nurse practitioner-led clinics also help patients navigate the health system and connect them, if needed, with other service providers and community-based programs and services.

The Barrie clinic is one of 25 nurse practitioner clinics that will open over the next three years. Seven more nurse practitioner-led clinics will be announced in the next few weeks. The clinics are part of the government’s plan to expand access to health care for all Ontarians.
