How’s your resolution to quit smoking going?

New statistics from the Ontario Medical Association show that more patients than ever are seeking the advice of their physician in an effort to quit smoking. With National Non-Smoking Week around the corner (January 17-23), Ontario’s doctors want patients to know that they are here to help them quit.

“Quitting smoking is a popular New Year’s resolution and unfortunately one that is difficult to keep,” said Dr. Suzanne Strasberg. “Ontario’s doctors want to help their patients become smoke-free by showing them the health benefits of quitting and providing resources such as smoking cessation medicines.”

The most recent data from 2008 shows that Ontario’s doctors counsel more than 214,000 patients per year who want to quit smoking. This number is almost double what it was two years ago, but there is still room for improvement. While Ontarians are increasingly talking to their doctors about quitting smoking, there are still over 2 million smokers in Ontario. Ontario’s doctors hope that by lending their expertise, more patients will be motivated to take the first step towards quitting.

“There’s no question that quitting smoking is a difficult thing to do and sometimes patients need that extra push,” said Dr. Strasberg. “I encourage anyone who is trying to quit, or even just thinking about it, to seek the helpful support and resources that their doctor can provide.”
